Coffee scales are not for everyone. Here at CoffeeSphere, only one of us uses a coffee scale when brewing coffee. If you don’t want to be bothered with another gadget, then this post is not for you. But if you’re someone who wants to brew your coffee like your barista, read on.

Up until a couple of years ago, during the pre-specialty coffee shop days, no one talked about getting a coffee scale. Much like a cook that uses a kitchen scale to achieve the same great results every time, these days baristas and coffee enthusiasts believe too that to create a good cup of coffee consistently, they have to lessen the margin for error in measuring water and coffee. So, a coffee scale comes into play.

You can certainly use your kitchen scale to measure your water and coffee. If you don’t have one, here are the best five coffee scales to buy:

1. Hario v60 Drip Scale and Timer

Not just a coffee scale, the Hario V60 Drip Scale and Timer, measures water and coffee and also functions as a drip timer. You have complete control on timing your brew. It is easy to use and measures in 0.1 gram increments. It uses 2 AAA batteries. This is for someone who likes a professional and no fuss coffee scale.

2. American Weigh 1KG Digital Pocket Scale, 1000 x 0.1g

For portability, accuracy, and affordability, get the American Weigh 1 KG Digital Pocket Scale. Weighs up to 1,000 grams in 0.1 gram increments, this digital pocket scale is good for traveling and for someone who doesn’t want to spend more than $10.

This scale would be suitable if you want to try using a scale to measure your coffee without having to pay more. But if you’re serious about perfecting the art and science of brewing coffee, don’t get this. Get either a Hario v60, Acaia or Brewista coffee scale.

3. AWS Digital Kitchen Scale

This lovely in pink digital kitchen scale has a clean design, made of colored glass and plastic. It has touch activated keys, uses 2 CR2032 Lithium batteries and a weighing capacity of 11 pounds. That is quite a large capacity compared to the American Weigh, which has just a  one-kilogram capacity. There are seven color options – pink, white, lime, blue, turquoise, red and orange.

The AWS scale will come in handy if you want a kitchen scale and you’re trying to have some fun weighing water and coffee. It’s not suitable for someone who wants to time their brew. It doesn’t come with a timer.

Get it at Target.

4. Acaia Coffee Scale

The Acaia coffee scale won the Best New Product Award during the 2014 SCAA Expo (Specialty Coffee Expo). For accuracy, preciseness and aesthetic, get the Acaia coffee scale. The scale has a built in stopwatch where you can track the blooming, pouring and infusion time. You can sync it to your mobile phone.  You have a choice of two colors – black and pearl.
