There are certain foods that just get attention on social media. One of those is anything ube flavored. And that’s because of its attention-grabbing purple shade.

When used in cake, ice cream, doughnuts, and now coffee, it’s hard not to stop scrolling to take a closer look.

What is ube?

Ube is a purple yam. It’s associated with Filipino cuisine since it’s used in many Filipino desserts.

Ube flavored treats have become even more accessible as of late. If you’re a Trader Joe’s shopper, you may have seen their line of ube flavored products, including ube pancake mix, spread, and mochi.

What does ube taste like?

While it is a yam, I think ube tastes like vanilla. So adding the flavor to coffee is almost like a vanilla latte—except purple.

Ube Latte Ingredients

Tips for Making Ube Latte

Ube

I used an ube flavoring from Amazon.

You may be able to find an ube flavoring or extract at your local grocery or at an Asian grocery store.

Espresso

I made espresso using my moka pot.

If you don’t own an espresso machine, check out these methods to make espresso at home.

As for the coffee beans, use your favorite beans for espresso. I went with Holler Mountain from Stumptown Coffee Roasters this time, which I found at my local grocery store, or you can find it online.

Milk

I used a dairy-free alternative. My go-to is usually unsweetened almond milk. Use whatever you prefer and like to pair with coffee.

Ice

To make this an iced ube latte (which I did in this recipe), just add ice!

How to Make Ube Latte

  1. Brew coffee. I used a moka pot
  2. Pour milk of choice into a glass.
  3. Mix in ube flavoring
  4. Add ice. (Optional)
