To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Dunkin Donuts releases coffee drinks available only for a limited time. This includes the Pink Velvet Macchiato and what we’re making here, the Mocha Macchiato.

You may see this drink frequently on your social media feeds during February. These two drinks are all about the photo-worthy layers!

Each drink is paired with a limited-edition doughnut. The Pink Velvet Macchiato with the pink Cupid’s Choice Donut and the Mocha Macchiato is paired with the heart-shaped Brownie Batter Donut.

I took a trip to Dunkin to pair my homemade Mocha Macchiato with its doughnut counterpart, as you’ll see in my images.

(When I come up with a doughnut recipe one day, I’ll share that. But for now, here’s how you can make the Dunkin Mocha Macchiato at home!)

What is a macchiato at Dunkin Donuts?

When you order a macchiato at Dunkin, you’re ordering an espresso-based drink. When you order it iced, you’ll get the layered coffee. It’s made by pouring milk over ice, followed by two shots of espresso. This is the macchiato we’re making here.

For other coffee shops, you may encounter two types of macchiatos. Keep in mind that macchiato means marked or stained in Italian.

So the espresso macchiato is a shot of espresso with just a touch of steamed milk. It’s like espresso that’s marked with milk.

Meanwhile, the layered macchiato like the Dunkin one is called a latte macchiato. This is a substantially larger drink than an espresso macchiato.

Tips for Making Mocha Macchiato

Espresso

Don’t have an espresso machine at home? I brewed espresso using a moka pot

Check out our guide to making espresso without an espresso machine. Other methods include a French press and Aeropress. But personally, I use a moka pot. It’s easy to use, easy to clean and inexpensive. It brews a concentrated coffee that resembles espresso.

For this Dunkin copycat recipe, consider using the Dunkin Original Blend beans.

Milk

I made my mocha macchiato dairy free by using almond milk. Feel free to use any of your favorite milk or milk alternatives.

You can also use chocolate milk in replacement of regular milk and chocolate sauce if you have that on hand.

Ice

While Dunkin uses regular water based ice cubes, when you make it at home, you have the option to use coffee ice cubes.

Coffee ice cubes are the way to avoid ever having watered down coffee. When the ice cubes melt, you just get more coffee! Simply pour coffee instead of water into ice cube trays and freeze. You can also add coffee syrups to the coffee before freezing for additional flavor.

How to Make Mocha Macchiato

  1. Brew espresso. Set aside to cool completely. I used a moka pot
  2. Mix milk and chocolate sauce to make chocolate milk.
  3. Pour chocolate milk into a glass with ice.
  4. Pour espresso over the ice and milk.
  5. Drizzle chocolate sauce on top.

Step 1

Brew espresso. I used a moka pot. Make sure to set this aside to cool completely. You don’t want it to melt your ice immediately.

Step 2

Place milk and chocolate sauce in a mason jar. Tightly seal the cap on and shake to mix.

Step 3

Pour chocolate milk into a glass filled with ice.

Step 4

Pour espresso over the ice and milk.

Optional: Drizzle chocolate sauce on top.
