The frappe was invented by accident during the 1957 International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki, Greece by Dimitris Vakondios, an employee of Nescafe. Though he was at the fair to promote a new chocolate drink made using a shaker for children, he ended up creating a caffeinated drink. When he wanted to have a cup of coffee while at the fair, he replaced chocolate with coffee and ended up with the Greek frappe.

It became so popular in Greece that it is now apparently the national coffee drink of Greece. And since then, Nescafe has even made a Frappe shaker just to make the drink. But if you don’t have one, there are other methods you can use at home, including a milk frother which we used to make our Greek frappe.

Here’s how you can make it at home.

What You Need to Make a Greek Frappe

How to Make a Greek Frappe

Step 1

Add water and instant coffee to milk frother. Turn on frother and set to the cold frothing setting. Pour in sugar while the water and instant coffee are frothing.

If you do not have a milk frother, you can also use a handheld frother or shake all the ingredients vigorously in a mason jar.

Step 2

Water, instant coffee and sugar mixture is ready when it forms a stiff peak. Scoop this mixture into a glass full of ice.

Step 3

Pour more water to fill the glass. Give it a stir, add more ice cubes and enjoy!

Dalgona Coffee vs Greek Frappe

If you’re familiar with Dalgona coffee, you may have notice that these two coffee drinks sound very similar. Though Dalgona coffee originated in South Korea and the Greek frappe in Greece, they both use a water, instant coffee and sugar mixture.

The main difference is that the mixture is added on top of cold milk for the Dalgona coffee drink, meanwhile the mixture is stirred in for a Greek frappe and doesn’t have milk (though you could add milk if you’d like.)
