Cold Brew Float

Ice cream floats are typically varying sodas like Coca Cola or root beer with a heaping scoop of ice cream. When mixed in, it gives the soda a delicious, sweet and creamy upgrade.

Why not use Cold Brew instead of soda? This Cold Brew Float does just that.

If you’ve ever been to Bluestone Lane, you may have encountered a Cold Brew Float. Part of our team here at CoffeeSphere is based in New York City, so we have several of these Australian cafes around the city. 

Their description for the Cold Brew Float is “Our signature flagstaff coffee immersed in water for 12 hours to extract and form a rich concentrate, served with vanilla ice cream.” 

With this, I set out to create my own Cold Brew Float at home. It’s very simple, but you’ll need to plan ahead. Making cold brew coffee requires a bit of time (12 to 15 hours!) But after you’ve brewed a batch of it, you can store it in the refrigerator and use it for several other cold brew coffee drinks. 

So start brewing some cold brew coffee and get ready for a delicious Bluestone Lane inspired Cold Brew Float. 

(You can even purchase the coffee they use for cold brew coffee online. It’s called Flagstaff.)

Tips for Making Cold Brew Float

Cold Brew Coffee

To make cold brew coffee, I used Stone Cold Jo coffee beans and a French press.

There are a few easy methods to making cold brew coffee. The only trick is you need to plan in advance as the coffee beans will need to steep in water for at least 12 hours to make the cold brew.

Also, note that you do not need to use cold brew specific coffee beans. Any coffee beans will work. You’ll just need to make sure the coffee beans are coarsely ground as this will yield the best results when steeping the coffee beans. 

If you want to make it like Bluestone Lane’s you could also purchase their coffee for home and use it to make cold brew coffee, like their Flagstaff coffee. 

Ice Cream 

I used storebought vanilla ice cream.

You can also use your favorite ice cream flavor, like coffee ice cream for extra coffee flavor. This can be storebought, or you can also make ice cream really easily at home – no churning or special ingredients required! 

Check out our no churn coffee ice cream recipe here. You’ll just need heavy whipped cream, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and instant coffee (this can be switched out with a different ingredient depending on the flavor you intend to make.) 

Just mix all the ingredients with an electric mixer, pour into a loaf pan and leave it in the freezer overnight. The result is a creamy ice cream that’s perfect to top your cold brew float. 

Toppings

I used a drizzle of Torani Chocolate Sauce to top my Cold Brew Float. 

You can choose to drink it with just the vanilla ice cream or dress it up. Here are some more ideas to top your cold brew float: 

How to Make Cold Brew Float

  1. Make cold brew coffee concentrate. I used a French press and steeped coarsely ground Stone Cold Jo coffee beans for 15 hours. 
  2. Add ice to a glass. 
  3. Pour cold brew concentrate and some water. 
  4. Top with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  5. Optional: Drizzle some chocolate sauce on top.

Step 1

Make cold brew coffee concentrate.

To do this, you can use a French press. Check out our guide to making cold brew coffee at home. You’ll need at least 12 hours for the coffee to steep. 

Step 2

Add ice to a glass, cold brew concentrate and some water (the amount will depend on how concentrated you prefer your cold brew coffee.) 

Step 3 

Top with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. Optional: Drizzle chocolate sauce or other toppings.

2. Add ice to a glass. 

3. Pour cold brew concentrate and some water. 

4. Top with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream.
