Coffee Pairing: What Coffee Lovers Have When Drinking Coffee

Cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe du Monde New Orleans

Have you ever wondered why Starbucks, coffee bars and your local café serve coffee with an array of sweet treats? Is it to add on more revenue or is it because coffee goes well with sweet treats?

Some experts call it coffee pairing, that is having coffee with a dessert.

While traveling we noticed that almost all ordinary cafés in South America and the gourmet coffee bars in Iceland, Indonesia and Hong Kong serve a cup of espresso, Americano or latte with a tiny piece of cookie or chocolate and a glass of water. This concept of serving a complimentary cookie with coffee has not caught on in most American cafés. However you can purchase these treats along with your coffee.

We think coffee and sweet treats are the best inventions on planet earth! For help with coffee pairing ideas we turned to the experts.

Here are four coffee pairing ideas we found and one of them is one of the world’s most famous cafés in New Orleans:

Pour Over style or French Press coffee with Bacon, Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies

Bon Appetit’s article Best Coffee Bar Desserts in America published on February 18, 2012 has the best coffee pairing ideas. There are six coffee pairing ideas and we like the French Press coffee with Bacon, Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies.

Who could resist bacon, oatmeal and raisin cookies? These cookies definitely sound like healthy sweets and the recipe is so easy to follow.

Espresso Macchiato and Coffee Cheesecake

We sampled and really liked the espresso macchiato at a William Sonoma store in New York City. So while looking for coffee pairing, naturally we were inclined to check out Nespresso’s website for ideas and recipes.

Café Au Lait and Beignets

Since 1862 The Original Café Du Monde in New Orleans has been serving French-style dark roasted coffee and chicory with beignets. Beignets are square French-style doughnuts (fried fritters) covered with powdered sugar. Café Du Monde’s Au Lait is a mix of half and half with hot milk and coffee.

You can find beignets recipes from Allrecipes.com.

We like our coffee without sugar because we get our dose of sugar from the sweet treats. How about you? Do you have a coffee pairing suggestion? Let us know.
