Historical buildings, bridges and squares adorned Nevsky Prospekt, the main avenue of St. Petersburg. To find a place for coffee is not easy if you walk along the crowded street without a guidebook or knowledge of the Russian language.
It was easy to spot Ivanoff House. It has a light green exterior with bright red awnings. We peeked through the window, saw some people having coffee and we discovered a hidden gem.
How do you order coffee in Russian?
We asked that question and Google showed us howcast.com’s video. To ask for ‘a cup of coffee, please’ you would say ‘chashkoo kofee pazhaloosta!’ Thanks howcast.com.
Décor and ambience
The waiter wearing a pink T-shirt and white apron showed us to a table by the window. The menu was in Russian and English. Our waiter spoke English too.
Ivanoff House presents a rich Russian heritage with painted plates and locally made tablecloths and ornaments. Located right in the center of Nevsky Prospekt, the café was filled with locals and a few tourists like us.
It is a casual place with wood paneling and cozy window seats. Free Wi-Fi was available in Ivanoff House.
Coffee: Type, price and taste
Ivanoff House serves traditional Russian food and a few European dishes. They had espresso, Americano, coffee with milk and cappuccino. The coffee ranges from 120 rubles to 160 rubles.
Besides the popular Russian blini with red caviar and sour cream, traditional Russian dumplings, Russian borsch (soup), and piroshki with cabbage, mushrooms and potatoes, you can order grilled salmon, steak and turkey.
An espresso with any of the piroshki is the perfect combination when you need a quick refill while exploring St. Petersburg.
