If you like the taste of brown sugar with its rich molasses flavor and want to add it to coffee, here’s how you can.

How do you dissolve sugar in cold brew?

When it comes to cold brew coffee or iced coffee, I’ve found simply adding a teaspoon or two of sugar into the coffee coffee doesn’t work too well. It doesn’t mix easily.

The solution is to dissolve it beforehand by making a simple syrup.

Simple syrup is, as the name suggests, simple to make. Just use equal parts water and sugar and heat it on medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.

You can do this with granulated sugar and in this case, brown sugar (whether you use light or dark brown sugar is up to you.) And you can also add different flavors, like adding mint for a mint simple syrup which I used for my mint iced coffee (and also use for cocktails!)

Tips for Making Brown Sugar Cold Brew Coffee

Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate

Making cold brew coffee is easy but takes a bit of time – around 15 hours.

Read our guide to making cold brew coffee here. There are 3 methods you can use.

My preferred choice and the one I used here is the French press method. Here’s how:

  1. I grind my coffee beans coarsely (these can be your favorite coffee beans, you don’t necessarily need to use coffee that’s labeled as ‘cold brew coffee beans’ – I used Stumptown Coffee Hair Bender.)
  2. Then place the coarsely ground coffee beans in the French press.
  3. I use 1 cup of coffee beans with 3 cups of water and cover the French press, but don’t press the plunger down just yet.
  4. Set aside and let the coffee beans steep for 12-15 hours.
  5. Press the plunger down, straining the coffee and store it in a mason jar

I used a French press and mixed 1 cup of coarsely ground Stumptown Coffee Hair Bender with 3 cups of water. I set this aside for 14 hours, then store it in a mason jar in the refrigerator.

Step 2

Make brown sugar simple syrup.

To do this, place equal parts of water and brown sugar in a saucepan and heat over medium heat. I used ½ cup of brown sugar, but if you want to make more so you can store it for future use, you can. Just make sure to use equal parts.
